The Grasmere Sports and Lakeland show, which is now in its 165th year, took place on bank holiday Sunday on the showfield in Grasmere, attracting visitors and competitors from far and wide.
Featuring all kinds of traditional sports including Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling, fell running and hound trailing, the event is a firm favourite on the county’s country show calendar, with organisers saying thousands attended the event.
Parts of the day’s highlights were the static veteran car display, a tug-of-war competition and a para-gliding demonstration.
Now in his sixth year in the role, sports manager George Gale said: “The sports went very, very well. Around four and a half thousand people attended; it has been a wonderful day.
“We had 170 entries in the seven-to-11 sprint race – the most we have ever had – and the wrestling went on for about five hours.
“We had entries from Iceland and Scotland, as well as local people.
“There was a little bit of drizzle but it turned out a nice sunny day.
“People say it is a wonderful family event with a wonderful atmosphere and there is always something to find to do.
“Children were racing ferrets and there were lines of people queuing to race and watch. It was absolutely amazing.”
Making a return to open this years sports were the Adamson Military Band who also presented numerous marching displays through out the day.
Along with various adult fell races to take part in, there were also races and activities to suit little legs, such as the girls’ and boys’ track race and the children’s sprint and fun races.
Canine visitors also had their moment in the spotlight, with numerous puppy trails, as well as a terrier and pet show.
