Canines and their humans turned out in force to support the first Gleaston Village Dog Show on Saturday.

The village green was a sea of wagging tails for the inaugural event.

The show opened with a high-energy demonstration by members of Barrow Dog Agility Club. Other dogs were also able to have a go at the obstacles later in the day.

There were classes for terriers, hounds, gundogs, pastoral and working dogs, and toy and utility dogs.

Mixed breed dogs, puppies, veterans and children’s best friends also all had their day.

The novelty classes even included best sausage catcher.

Judge Paulyn Whetstone, of Scruffy2Fluffy pet groomers in Barrow, had the unenviable task of choosing the winners from so many lovely dogs.

Irish terrier Minnie, from Gleaston, was the show champion, while the reserve champion was Newfoundland cross, Ralph from Barrow.

The rescued or rehomed dog winner was Clancy, a cavalier King Charles spaniel from Barrow. Jasmine the standard poodle, of Coniston, won the toy/utility class.

The event raised money for Gleaston Village funds and a large donation is being made to Animal Refuge to support the homeless dogs at Walney Kennels.

Maria Murray, of Gleaston Village Committee and the new Murray’s Dog Hotel in the village, said: “The day went fantastically well. We were really, really busy and the feedback was amazing.

“Everyone was saying what a lovely day it was.

“We hope to make the show bigger and better next year.”
