The annual Black Combe Fair was held on Monday in Bootle.

Originally held at Muncaster, the popular country fair has now reached its eighth year in its new location.

With lots going on, there was something for everyone, whether competing or just spectating.

Sandra Cummings has been the show secretary for the past two years.

She said: “We have had brilliant weather. We tend to be quite lucky, it’s just been a lovely sunny day and a great day out for everyone.

“Shows like these are so important, they bring people together in the local community. The local support makes this different to any other show in the area.

“We have a committee which is just made up of local people and a number of people who turn up who aren’t on the commitee and give their own time to the show.

“They don’t have to be here, they aren’t getting anything out of it other than doing something that they think is important for the community.”

With a record number of trade stalls both outside and inside, shoppers were spoilt for choice and, after working up an appetite over the day’s events, there was a variety of options when it came to food.

Ice cream, breads, puddings and cakes were just a few of the choices on offer to curb the cravings.

Whether there for the Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling, the vintage engine judging or the fell pony display, there was lots to see and do.

Taking up a large portion of the show were the dog judging categories.

There were categories ranging from gun dog, lurcher, whippet and beagle classes, and also categories for the dog with the waggiest tail, the dog most like its owner and the best under-16 child handler. Free entry for children proved another popular part of this year’s event.

Ms Cummings added: “We haven’t charged this year. If you are under 15 you get in for free and a lot of familes have said how nice it has been to have a day out that didn’t cost an extortionate amount just to get in, so I think it has really encouraged families to come out.

“There has been so much to see and do, it’s just a fun, family day out. We don’t have a huge amount on this west coast, we kind of get forgotten about so it’s nice to provide something that doesn’t cost a huge amount of money for people to go and see and do.”
