A SINGLE mother has appeared in court after she was spotted drink driving around Barrow and then failed to give police an accurate reading when breathalysed.

Sharon Dixon, of Hibbert Road, Barrow pleaded guilty on Tuesday to failing to provide a specimen for analysis and failing to stop after a road accident at Furness Magistrates' Court.

The court heard how the 48-year-old was reported to police by a member of the public after getting out of her Peugeot in Oxford Street, Barrow, looking "intoxicated" on August 12.

Police later attended Dixon's home where the court heard how she refused to blow in to the breathalyser, choosing to suck it instead.

Maureen Fawcett, defending, said Dixon had worked a night shift to help out her employer but could not sleep afterwards so had drank a bottle of gin earlier that day.

Miss Fawcett added: "She is mortified and can't help thinking about what could have happened."

An earlier statement from Dixon said she had no recollection of what had happened and her only memory was of police turning up at her house.

Dixon was disqualified from driving for 29 months and given a 12-week sentence, suspended for 12 months.

She must also pay court costs of £115 a victim surcharge of £115.
