YOUNG performers and special guests wowed their audience with a musical extravaganza which raised hundreds of pounds for charity.

Pupils and former pupils of Newbarns Primary School staged One Night Only as a fundraiser for Jo’s Appeal in the school hall on Friday night.

The show had been rescheduled from the summer and former Year Six pupils from Newbarn’s Glee Club, who have now moved up to secondary school, returned to put on the event.

The Glee Club were joined by Newbarn's Drama Club and special guests Chris Barker, Karen Barker, Ryan Grainger and Hayley Nadine from the local musical theatre scene.

Excellent singing, dance and drama was showcased as the night took a trip through musicals such as Mary Poppins and Les Misérables.

The evening also featured hits by the likes of Adele and Bruno Mars performed by the special guests. There was also a raffle.

The night raised hundreds of pounds for Jo's Appeal, set up in memory of popular Evening Mail journalist Jo Davies. Her appeal raises funds for Furness General Hospital oncology unit, St Mary’s Hospice and national women’s cancer charity, The Eve Appeal.

Among her many roles, Jo was a dedicated Newbarns correspondent and Newbarns Primary want to remember her and raise money for the charities.

Glee Club is a group of former Year Six children who worked with teacher Rachel McClure. Drama Club is made up from pupils who work with Patricia Whyte, a teaching assistant and Jo's godmother.

Newbarns Primary encourages pupils to get involved in extra-curricular activities to develop a multitude of talents and skills.

Mrs McClure, who organised the event, thanked all the performers and everyone who supported the show.

She said: "The event was a real success. The performances were superb. Members of the audience commented on how talented the children are.

"Thank you to our wonderful guest performers, the children were able to learn a lot from them.

"Our audience was very enthusiastic and the atmosphere on the night was very lively.

"It has been a real pleasure that we have been able to raise money for Jo's Appeal."
