PETROL heads came from far and wide to take part in the first Barrow Scooter Rally.

Dozens of some of the most iconic two-wheeled vehicles ever made glinted in the sun at Hawcoat Park on Saturday as their proud owners prepared to take part in the charity ride.

Organised by the Barrow Ready Steady Go Scooter Club, this was the first official rally held in the town since the club's inception in 1979.

Club member Fred Stewart said: "There are more than 40 members in Barrow and two clubs, it's quite big in the town at the moment.

"This is the first rally we've had in Barrow, it's just getting the word out to people.

"It's good for the area, a lot of these lads have come from different places to come and see what we've got.

"It is a long-standing tradition within the scooter community to raise money for charity. Events like today are a way of gathering together the community, having fun, and donating money to a good cause.

"We pay our subscription each year which goes towards parts and fees. Any surplus we have left we dish out to charity, we don't need it, it's no use to us."

Hawcoat Park let the assembled riders use the hall inside for a night-time concert, as well as letting bikers from further afield camp overnight.

A strong bond is felt between members of the community. Enjoying the mechanics of the scooters, the retro styling and the camaraderie between members has ensured decades of devotion to scooter clubs.

Treasurer of the Barrow club, Paul Martin, said: "Scooting has a close sense of community."

Gary Williams, one of the club's founder members said: "It's something that I did when I was younger, you relive your youth."

The scooters drove from Hawcoat, down Abbey Road to Ulverston, passing through Dalton. They then took the scenic route along the coast road back to Barrow.
