A PARADE will take place next month in Barrow to mark the Battle of Britain Day.

Usually held on the third Sunday of September, the Battle of Britain Day marks the three-month Royal Air Force campaign to defend the UK against the German Luftwaffe attacks.

Taking place from the end of the June 1940 during the Second World War, it is described as being the first major campaign fought entirely by air forces.

On Sunday September 17, RAF veterans will march from Barrow Town Hall to the Cenotaph at Barrow Park, setting off at 11.30am.

The Battle of Britain takes its name from a speech by Winston Churchill to the House of Commons on 18 June: "What General Weygand has called The Battle of France is over. The Battle of Britain is about to begin."
