A FATHER and son have successfully completed a 1,800-mile journey across mainland Europe in a car they bought for less than £500.

Paul Wojcik participated in his third Veterans Banger Rally with his son Joseph and said it would be his final one.

The rally is in support of causes for armed forces veterans. They set off from Barrow on September 24 and made it to Gibraltar on October 1.

Paul said he had no issues with his 30-year-old car during his epic journey and the main issue was the 30-degree heat he experienced in the final leg through Spain.

They bought the car in 2021, when they originally planned to do the trip, for less than £500. When they bought the car it had not been on the road since 2002 but was brought up to standard by Joseph and Little Tony's Tyres in Barrow.

Unfortunately, Covid restrictions in France prevented the veterans' rally from travelling into continental Europe so they did a trip around the UK instead. Two years later, the car finally did its intended journey.

He met up with another team from Barrow who travelled in an old Volvo converted to look like the Ghostbusters vehicle in front of the Rock of Gibraltar.

On the way to Gibraltar the group stopped in Dunkirk to pay their respects to World War Two veterans and enjoyed a fancy dress night in Benidorm.

Paul said: "It was just a hard slog in 30 degrees all the time. It was a relief to get there. It was good fun doing it with other teams. There were 101 people in total when we got to Gibraltar. Last night we had an auction for Cancer Relief and raised £260."

This is on top of the total amount raised by Paul and his son for Friedreich's Ataxia and MND, which they are still calculating.

Paul was planning on driving the 1993 Banham Superbug back to England but is now looking to sell it in Gibraltar.

The father and son duo are enjoying two days of rest in Gibraltar before heading home.

Last year, they went there and back in a Citroen Berlingo van, which Paul still uses. They raised £1,150 for Ostley House Dementia Unit from the 2021 trip.
