A GROUP of armed forces and ex-merchant navy veterans will drive from Barrow to Gibraltar and back in cheap cars to raise money for charity.

Father and son Paul, 65, and Joseph Wojcik, will drive in their 1993 Banham Superbug, which is a Rover Metro 1120cc Kit Car Conversion, across France and Spain to the British exclave.

They will start their 3,600-mile journey on September 24.

They will raise money for Blind Veterans and charities supporting people with Friedreich's Ataxia and MND. The Wojciks hope to raise £1,000. Last year they raised £1,150 for Ostley House Dementia Unit.

The father and son bought the car in 2021, which is when they originally planned to do the trip, for less than £500. However Covid restrictions at the time meant that they instead did the rally around England.

They did manage to get to Gibraltar last year but in a Citroen Berlingo van.

Paul said: "The Superbug hadn't been on the road since 2002 when we bought it but we drove it in 2021 and did 1,350 miles around England."

His son did lots of work on the car to make it roadworthy and they have had help from Little Tony's Tyres in Barrow.

While the car does have a canvas roof, the Wojciks are hoping it does not rain as it has no doors.

The people participating in the rally include two Chelsea pensioners and another Barrow team who will be going in an old Volvo converted to look like the Ghostbusters car. Each night they will all meet up in locations on the way.

The rally participants will pay their respects to World War Two veterans when they get off the ferry in Dunkirk. A highlight of the trip will be in Benidorm where they will have a fancy dress night.

This year, they have to dress up a something related to the letter B. The rally will also be filmed for the Channel 5 programme Bargain Loving Brits in the Sun towards the end of the trip.
