THE Lake District offers many options for families to go out and have their own adventures.

As the Autumn weekends roll, families from across the county have set out in search of their own special days out.

Mountains

The fells and hills of the Lake District have made the area one of the most iconic and popular areas in the United Kingdom.

The Cumbrian three peaks challenge has attracted thousands of people to their summits, along with the 214 Wainwright Fells.

Both collection of mountains, along with the numerous others in the area are ideal for families seeking an adventure.

Jane Farran said: “We went walking and climbing mountains. We love the lakes.”

Swimming

The various lakes and rivers across the Lakes have attracted many sport practitioners and athletes, but they have also provided a fun atmosphere for families to go swimming and enjoy the water.

Lake Windermere is one of the areas most popular water destinations, alongside Ullswater, Elterwater and Tarn Hows.

Jim Mason said: “Going out and getting wet.”

Castles

The National Trust has thousands of properties and lands that are available for the public to visit.

A good family day can be to visit one of their many historic castles.

The castles at Sizergh, Kendal, Wray, Dalton and Piel are some of the must-see places to take your family on the weekend.

Colin Mitchel said: “We love to go to castles.”

Go Ape

A day out in Ambleside is exciting enough but going for an afternoon at Go Ape is one all families should try at least once.

The adventure-activity chain venue allows groups to explore and climb their exciting forest canopy on a treetop rope course.

Ravinder Singh said: “Great activity, really fun and recommend, especially if you don't fancy the effort of the tree trekking. We did the zip trek, eight zip lines down. Instructors Tom and Erika were really friendly and helpful, with knowledge of the area as well as the activity. We were the only ones in the group and it took us two hours to complete, with some great views on the way.”

Youth Hostels

For some people, youth hostelling is their first experience of spending time in the Lake District.

Families have no shortage of places to pick from where they can stay in a YHA hostel and explore the surrounding area.

Some of the best can be found in Grasmere, Windermere, Kendal, Hawkshead and Ambleside.

Laura Horton, who stayed in the Windermere YHA, said: “Stunning views (or great Wi-Fi if you get the car park view) and beautiful surroundings. Clean and well maintained inside and out. Helpful staff, especially letting us check in early as our room was already cleaned and prepped.”
