MYSTERY surrounds the future of a much-loved pub after the landlord announced its closure ‘with immediate effect’.

The General Burgoyne in Urswick issued a statement online earlier this week revealing that the site is now closed.

Bosses said: "The General Burgoyne is now closed with immediate effect. A statement will follow in the coming days."

John Oldfield, of Urswick, took on the reins at The General Burgoyne pub and restaurant in 2018 - despite only being 19-years-old at the time. It is believed he was the youngest pub landlord at the time.

The youngster decided to take on the challenge because he refused to see the business “join the worryingly long list” of pubs closing down in the area.

Speaking in 2018, he said: “I want to get the pub back on its feet and to being a vibrant country pub at the heart of the community and I feel like I have the energy, enthusiasm and patience to be able to do that.”

The pub is up for lease on the Robinsons Brewery website, asking for a five-year agreement for a weekly rent of £441.

According to the website, the potential turnover for prospective landlords would be £355,912.

A spokeswoman for Robinsons Brewery said the closure was not permanent and the pub would be re-opening on Wednesday.

Ben Cooper, South Lakeland District Councillor for the Furness Peninsula ward, offered up praise to John who has ‘done wonders’ to the pub since taking over.

He said: “It’s a fantastic community pub and it’s sad to see it close its doors even if it is only temporarily.

“It’s always been a great pub and I wish John the very best. I hope new owners are in there soon as we don’t want to see the place lay empty.

“I have been there several times myself and they do a fantastic Sunday roast.

“John has done wonders with the place since being there and I wish him all the best for the future.”

According to the listing online, Robinsons are looking for a new licensee to drive the wet and (especially) food offering, who can engage with the local community.
