OFCOM has received hundreds of complaints regarding the treatment of ex-islander Jacques O'Neill during his interview with host Laura Whitmore.

427 complaints were made to Ofcom about the Love Island spin-off show Aftersun, which airs straight after the main programme on Sunday.

The majority of the complaints related to the treatment of former rugby player Jacques, from Barrow, during his interview and comments made about Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu.

Some 129 complaints were made about Cumbrian rugby pro Jacques' wellbeing in the lead up to and during his departure from the island.

Responding to the complaints, ITV said: “We had various measures in place to ensure Jacques’ welfare was prioritised at all times ahead of and during his appearance on Aftersun.

“Should an islander not wish to participate in the Aftersun recording, we would always respect that decision.”

Since leaving the villa, Jacques has issued a statement on social media, talking about his time in the villa and the support from his fans.

Jacques said he wasn't 'mentally prepared' for what life in the villa was going to be like.

He said: "What a rollercoaster of emotions that was from start to finish. Since leaving the villa I've had time to reflect on my time being in there and if I am going to be completely honest I wasn't mentally prepared for how it was going to be at all - underestimated it massively.

"The first two weeks of my experience were probably the happiest I've ever been in a very long time.

"On the other hand, the last two weeks were definitely the worst I've ever felt in my life."

Jacques said that he has watched the episodes back where he got the most hate and 'understood why I did' adding: "I've got a lot of work to do for myself to become a better person."

Thanking fans for their support Jacques said: "If it wasn't for you I would be in such a worse head space than I am right now so thank you so much for that.

"I do really appreciate the love, honestly thank you so much."
