THERE is plenty of pantomime fun to be found in Millom this winter with three shows on offer at different venues.

To celebrate this traditional form of theatrical entertainment we are turning the clock back to pictures from The Mail archive of shows held in the town 20 and 25 years ago.

This year’s show by Millom Amateur Dramatic Society is Cinderella.

It can be seen at 7.30pm in Millom School, from Wednesday, November 20, to Friday, November22.

The Beggar’s Theatre, in the Market Square, has a new production of Beauty and the Beast from 7pm on Wednesday, December 4.

This show is on a six-week national tour.

Millom Amateur Operatic Society, which was founded in 1909,  will open the curtains on its Jack and the Beanstalk show at the Palladium Theatre.

It can be seen at 7.30pm on Wednesday, December 4, to Friday, December 6, at 7.30pm and on Saturday, December 7, at 2.30pm.

A voyage into the unknown was on offer 25 years ago when Sinbad was the Millom panto choice.

The Mail,on Monday, November 28, in 1994, noted: “Exotic costumes, and exciting adventure story and lots of colourful scenes characterise this production – as well as plenty of the traditional pantomime booing, hissing and joining in.

“Keith Hitchen is this year’s Dame, playing Sinbad’s mother Clothilda.

“Comedy favourite Terry Minter is Sinbad, Sheila Cloudsdale is principal boy playing the Prince and young Lucy Dixon is his bride Andularia.

“Songs include Give a Little Whistle, Agadoo, Pretty Woman and Fall in and Follow Me.

“Producer is Lynn McQuire and musical director is Chris Lloyd Rogers."

In November 1999 the panto choice at the Palladium was Mother Goose with Nerissa Nicholas as Colin and Karen Pugh as Jill, the object of the principal boy's love.

The Mail noted: "Jan Knake gets to don the frock as Millom's new dame in the title role.

"Jan made his Millom stage debut in April as Harry in Millom Amateurs' My Fair Lady.

"His goose, Priscilla, a children's favourite, will be played by comedy expert Viv Birkett."
