SMALL pieces of the moon arrived in Barrow back in 1992as part of a major science show aimed at youngsters.

The Mail, on Wednesday, November 11, noted: "Samples of moon rock brought back by the Apollo space missions are the star attraction in a space exhibition at Alfred Barrow School, Barrow, this week.

"More than 900 pupils from local schools are expected to visit the exhibition which is taking place in International Space Year.

"The exhibition was opened last night by Cumbria Education Authority's chief inspector John Nellist.

"He said Cumbria was developing a national reputation for space education work.

"The exhibition includes live satellite images, a scale model of a satellite and a mini-planetarium."

A giant model of the moon measuring 7m across will be suspended from the rafters of Lancaster Priory from November 1 to 20.

The huge artwork is by Luke Jerram - the biggest he has produced - and is based on detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface.

More than three million people have already seen versions of the artist's giant moon as it tours the world in the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.
