YOUNG birds are a feature of this time of year and back in 2003 the focus of Walney nature worker Jenny Holden was little tern chicks.
She had been based on Foulney Island the previous year and had welcomed her summer replacement Matt Priest, a botanist who was the new island warden for the Cumbria Wildlife Trust.
An article in The Mail on July 5 noted that Foulney’s rare little terns had bred for a second year and the chicks were doing well.
The island also had a profusion of pink thift and yellow horned poppies which could be seen from a nature trail.
