ANCIENT Greek gods were seen on the playing fields of Millom back in 1996 when youngsters at Black Combe School held their own “original Olympics”.

It was part of a wide range of events ahead of the Olympic Games being held at Atlanta in the United States.

It was also 100 years since of the holding of the first modern games in 1896 at Athens in Greece.

The pupils made their own Olympic torch, with Jenna Brown and Natalie Ellwood being among those who got to carry it.

Winner of the schools Olympics was Jenny Scutchings, who collected her prize from Zeus, king of the ancient Greek gods.

Also getting a Greek makeover for Millom’s Olympics was James Hartley, from Dalton, who was at Black Combe School on teaching practice.

It all ended with a banquet of food from the ancient world – which wasn’t to the taste of all the pupils.

In the 1996 Olympic Games Britain’s Matthew Pinsent and Steve Redgrave were gold medal winners in rowing's coxless pairs event.

American athlete Michael Johnson won the 200m and 400m finals in world record-breaking times.
