A nuclear power station was planned on a coastal site near Millom by the German firm RWE npower. Test drilling had already been carried out for two pressurised water reactors.

A terraced house at Silverdale Street, Barrow, was offered for sale at £49,950. A semi-detached house at Clarence Road, Barrow, was £165,000.

Barrow's Ramsden Street United Reformed Church was having a celebration day to mark a £37,000 revamp.

Train services between Barrow and Millom were suspended after a farmer at Askam unearthed a wartime shell just yards from the track.

Employees at Glaxo in Ulverston were being offered lifestyle assessments by the company's occupational health unit. The check-ups were voluntary and lasted under an hour.

Ulverston electronics firm Hyspec Systems loaned its 13ft mechanical pike to the Low Wood Waterski Centre, near Windermere, as an attraction. It was a copy of one made for a 1982 film which was never made, called The Pike, which was due to star Joan Collins.

The Department of the Environment approved a 14-bedroom extension at the Newby Bridge Hotel.

A detached bungalow with a garage at Windermere Avenue, in Hawcoat Barrow, was offered for sale at £5,000.
