THIS summer will see the start of a Lakeland archaeology project at a site which provided shelter for children from Nazi concentration camps but you can find out more about this remarkable story of survival now — in an exhibition at Windermere library.
A TV documentary, wall displays and memorabilia form part of From Auschwitz to Ambleside.
It can be seen daily, except Wednesdays and Sundays, in the library’s first floor gallery.
At the end of the Second World War more than 300 youngsters – many ill and poorly nourished — arrived in hostels at the Calgarth Estate, near Troutbeck Bridge.
This once housed wartime aircraft workers.
The children described this place of safety in the Lake District as their own “paradise”.
