THE stirring sounds of the Ulverston Drum Majorettes became a new feature of carnivals and charity events in South Cumbria back in 1986.

Annual gala days were held each May and featured a big parade by the marching musicians.

In 1989 it was held on the Ulverston Victoria Lower School playing fields and raised cash for the special care baby unit at Barrow's Furness General Hospital.

The Mail, on October 27, in 1987, noted: "Ulverston majorettes have been overwhelmed by their own success, says founder John Hoggarth.

"When he started the majorettes a year ago, he thought he would be doing well to get a full competition troupe of 15 girls.

"Now the roll stands at 87."

He said that a company of boys was being formed.

The senior, junior and tots squads went to displays in red and white uniforms.

The article noted: "Youngsters are so keen that they are even coming from Barrow."

In 1987 six-year-old Leanne Threlfall was chosen as the first mascot for the Ulverston Drum Majorettes.
