The Barrow Samaritans office, in Hartington Street, was to open on Sundays for the first time in response to the credit crunch in the run-up to Christmas. The volunteer service had seen an increase in calls from people with financial worries.
A terraced house at Ocean Road, Walney, was offered for sale at £145,000. A detached house at Ashdown Road, Barrow, was £152,950.
A new parent company was set to take over the Sellafield nuclear site in a £22bn deal. It would be led by American consortium Nuclear Management Partners.
Plans were passed for six semi-detached houses and a garage on land off Lord Street, Askam.

It was hoped that a quarter of Barrow's rubbish could be recycled by the end of the century. The target was set in a draft plan by Barrow Borough Council. Recycling banks already collected 200 tonnes of glass per year.
Barrow Travel employee Lynne Spencer was nominated as shop assistant of the year in a contest being run by Barrow Chamber of Trade.
A detached dormer bungalow at Overbeck Drive, Barrow, was offered for sale at £80,000. A semi-detached house at Wellington Street, Barrow, was £47,950.
50 YEARS AGO
You could rent the new 19-inch Ultra Bermuda TV for 42p per week from Dalton Radio branches in Barrow, Dalton and Ulverston.
The four-man crew of a goods train jumped clear jest before it crashed into a stationary wagon and a set of buffers at Ulverston railway station goods yard.
