THERE was everything from popcorn to a dress made from newspapers as South Cumbrian Guides competed for a challenge shield.
The event, held at Dalton, was covered in The Mail on October 20 in 1997.
It noted: “As the smell of grilled sausage wafted into Dalton Drill Hall, a scene of organised chaos met the eye.
“Girls in blue shirts, split into several groups, were engaged in a range of strange activities, from Maori stock dancing to dress design with newspapers.”
This event was the annual Guide’s Shield contest which involved 54 girls from nine Guide companies.
The article noted: “Other challenges involved making a collage, first aid, cooking barbecue, morris dancing and making popcorn.
“The 17th Barrow (Dalton Church) company were the winners.”
