READERS have been highlighting examples of inconsiderate and illegal parking in Barrow, Dalton, Ulverston and Millom.

Pictures sent in from readers include one in which a blue estate car is parked across a dropped kerb in Greengate Street.

The Highway Code advises drivers “do not stop or park….where the kerb has been lowered to help wheelchair users and powered mobility vehicles, or where it would obstruct cyclists’ use of cycle facilities… except when forced to do so by stationary traffic”.

In instances where a vehicle parks alongside or partially obstructs a dropped kerb the council can issue a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) to the contravening vehicle, subject to the exemptions listed below. Civil Enforcement Officers will normally enforce when patrolling their daily patrol route.

Others highlighted the ongoing issue of vehicles parking illegally near to schools.

One resident in Barrow said: "This driver was parking on the yellow gig zags outside St Bernard's School as their child/grandchild is more important than any other pupil in the school. I have a video of this and when I pointed out the error of their ways was politely told to f-off by the woman in the passengers seat."

The problem isn't isolated to Barrow of course. Plenty of readers have highlighted issues in Dalton, Ulverston and Millom too.

One Ulverston resident said: "I get incensed by bad parking in this town. Here are a few of those I have caught on camera over the last few weeks.

"I have witnessed a young mum pushing a pram up Hest View Rd, Croftlands because she couldn't pass on either side of the pavement because the pavement was blocked by cars (most of these houses have a driveway)."

Cumbria County Council is responsible for enforcing on-street parking.

In a statement a spokesman said: "We’d urge people to park considerately and respectfully, and to familiarise themselves with street signage and road markings. There is no excuse to park inconsiderately or dangerously. Poor parking can create a blind spot or obstruct other drivers’ lines of sight, especially near junctions.

“Any vehicles which are parked over a zig zag crossing outside schools will receive an instant ticket. By highlighting these issues and asking motorists to be more considerate, we hope the need for further enforcement can be avoided."
