READERS have been sharing their photos illustrating how motorists fighting for space in Ulverston have been parking close to junctions and over double yellow lines.

Following yesterday's picture of a Volkswagen Golf parked over the junction and on the pavement at the bottom of Lightburn Road in Ulverston by the junction with Chapel Street others have been submitted.

One reader shared a picture of a car parked clearly across part of a junction presenting a hazard for other road-users while another was shown parked over double yellow lines, on the pavement and across a solid white line.

The Highway Code states motorists must not park opposite or within 10 metres (32 feet) of a junction, except in an authorised parking space; near the brow of a hill or hump bridge; opposite a traffic island or (if this would cause an obstruction) another parked vehicle.

Cumbria County Council is responsible for enforcing on-street parking.

In a statement a spokesman said: "We’d urge people to park considerately and respectfully, and to familiarise themselves with street signage and road markings. There is no excuse to park inconsiderately or dangerously.  Poor parking can create a blind spot or obstruct other drivers’ lines of sight, especially near junctions.

“Any vehicles which are parked over a zig zag crossing outside schools will receive an instant ticket.  By highlighting these issues and asking motorists to be more considerate, we hope the need for further enforcement can be avoided."
