There was a total of 1,477 people in Barrow claiming Jobseekers Allowance, up by 125 on the previous month. The figure for Cumbria was 8,135.
An outdoor circus show called Reach for the Sky was confirmed as coming to Barrow park at the end of May. It would include 20 acts and was part of the Lakes Alive programme, sponsored by the Northwest Regional Development Agency.
A terraced house at Fenton Street, Barrow, was offered for sale at £64,950. A semi-detached house at Festival Road, Millom, was £123,000.
25 YEARS AGO
The Cumbria Magistrates Courts Committee recommended that courts at Millom and Alston should close by the end of the year.
Barrow’s Duke of Edinburgh Hotel was to be re-opened by owners Pubmasters, of Hartlepool, to see if it had a commercial future.
There were plans for a superstore in Flass Lane, Roose. It was to be operated by Shoprite.
A presentation was made to clerical workers Alice Jackson, Brenda Wilson and Jeannie Reynolds for a combined 75 years of service to Barrow Borough Council.
50 YEARS AGO
You could rent a colour television set for £1.25 per week from Kelly’s and Smith’s at 70 Dalton Road, Barrow and 8 Market Street, Ulverston.
The Merlin Children’s Theatre Company played in Barrow and Ulverston to almost 6,000 infant and junior children.
Flookburgh Amateur Operatic Society presented the Gypsy Princess at the Holker Institute, near Cark.
