A FURNESS group which offered the chance to go camping and learn Boy Scouts skills was celebrating its silver jubilee back in 1993.

The Mail on Tuesday, June 15, noted some of the activities at a typical meeting of the 26th Barrow Extension Scouts.

The group held meetings in a hut near Barrow's Park View School.

It was then the only one of its kind in the North West which specialised in providing access to Boy Scout activities for youngsters with physical difficulties or extra learning needs

Scout leader Colin Biggs had been in charge for 16 years.

He was helped by Graham White, Ben Beck, George Hardy and Andy Kerr.

The group was busy raising the cash for a new minibus through the sale of donated second hand books.

Mr Biggs said: "We adapt teaching to meet the challenge of dealing with each boy.

"It can be hard to do some activities if you can't move your legs, or your arm or hand won't work properly, so we try out different ways of doing a thing to see if it can be done.

"We get all the lads involved in that, so they become aware of one another's problems."
