Combat instructor Kevin Rowntree was brought in to give swashbuckling lessons to the cast of Bowness Festival Theatre's production of Treasure Island.

Cumbria County Council was considering the introduction of 10 sleeping policemen and a 20mph speed limit in Askam. The traffic calming scheme would cost £45,000.

A terraced house at Kendal Street, Barrow, was offered for sale at £95,000. An apartment at Victoria Court, Ulverston, was £135,000.

A pair of Victorian commercial buildings on Duke Street, Barrow, were being renovated with £450,000 from West Lakes Renaissance and the Northwest Regional Development Agency.

A public inquiry was being held at the Grange Hotel, Grange, into £8.4m plans for a High and Low Newton road bypass on the A590.

Bardsea's threatened Sea Wood was saved for public use — thanks to a £17,000 donation from Glaxo.

Jim and Doreen Croft, of Oakhead Road, Walney, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Mr Croft worked at Vickers in Barrow as a shipwright.

Only Environment Secretary John Gummer could now save Dalton's former Roxy cinema from demolition to make way for a supermarket and car park.

A gold wristwatch was presented to Eric Gunning on his retirement as publicity officer and collector for Grange council after 30 years.

A bottle of sherry was £1, whisky was £2.45 and a bottle of gin was £2.40 from branches of the Barrow Co-operative Society.
