More than 600 people signed a petition to save Furness College's nursery from closure. The college was due a £50m redevelopment but the plans did not include a nursery.

Gerald Fowler, chef at the Chilli Pepper Company in Cartmel, was to compete with nine chefs at the World Food Market in the ExCel centre, London.

A firm called Windcluster wanted to build nine 120ft wind turbines above Far Old Park Farm, on fells between Marton and Askam. It would generate enough power for a community the size of Ambleside.
Barrow flower grower Frank Wright snapped up a record 11 trophies in the Barrow Chrysanthemum Society Show held at St Luke's Church Hall, on Roose Road.
A terraced house at Liverpool Street, Barrow, was offered for sale at £29,950. A semi-detached house at Larch Rise, Barrow, was £52,950.
A large hole opened up in St Luke's Street, Barrow, after paving stones collapsed into a sewer under the wheel of a van. The vehicle had to be lifted clear by a crane.
50 YEARS AGO
Barrow Road Safety Queen Jackie Shields presented cycling proficiency certificates to a group of 13 youngsters at the town's ABC cinema.
Millom's unemployment rate dropped from 16.2 per cent a month ago to 14.1 per cent. The high level was due to redundancies due to the closure of Millom Ironworks.
