MICHAEL Davidson’s house really is a family affair, having been owned by his mother before he took it on. As he told SUSAN GOODSON, he has always loved its traditional layout and quiet setting which is handy to the town’s shops

OVER the 20 years Michael Davidson has lived in his house, he has modernised and refurbished it from top to bottom.

This has included having a new roof put on and insulation, damp proofing, double glazing and central heating put in.

The house - 33 Devonshire Road, Millom - is a forecourted, well-presented house which is deceptive in size. Inside there are two double bedrooms, two reception rooms, a kitchen and a family bathroom. There is also an entrance vestibule and a hall with original corbels and cornice.

Outside at the front is a forecourt with space for seats and at the back is a cream-painted yard, which has been well maintained and concreted. It has a gate to the back lane which is grassed and a cul de sac.

As a shift worker, when Michael has had a few days off he has worked decorating the house, while calling in the experts for the specialist jobs. Although he liked the house, he has enjoyed modernising it.

Michael said: “I like the good-sized rooms, high ceilings and that it is bright and airy. It makes all the difference, especially in the winter.

“Because it is mid terrace and made of solid brick, it keeps warm, but is cool in the summer.

“I spend a lot of time in the big front room which looks out over the forecourt and, like the rest of the house, has a big window. It is so quiet, even though it is just a few minutes walk into the town centre.

“It is a good, wide street and there is no problem parking.”

The room has a picture window with opening top panes, chimney breast fitted gas fire, high ceiling and cornice and built-in alcove cupboard. It opens to the second reception room with its pine skirting boards and separate pine panel doors.

Michael said: “The rooms were all wallpapered but I had them stripped back and plastered and then painted them cream.”

The kitchen has been extended and is fitted with modern and attractive base/wall units. and modern black gloss, granite pattern recess tiling. The kitchen leads out into the sunny backyard.

Michael added: “Behind the house beyond the yard is a grass area which a lot of children play on.

“It is a nice safe area because it is a cul de sac, so there is no through traffic. Beyond that there are allotments.”

A lovely traditional spindled staircase leads to the first floor landing with both smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. The loft has a double glazed velux window and has been part boarded out and makes excellent storage space. While the master bedroom looks out over the wide street the second looks out to the neighbouring gardens.

The family bathroom has both a bath and walk-in thermostatic shower.

Michael said: “While the house is handy for town this is such a quiet area and the neighbours are excellent.

“We never have any trouble and it is safe for families with small children. “The reason I am selling is that it is a big house for one person and I am thinking that in the future I might want a bungalow.”
