EACH year hundreds if not thousands of people eagerly await the return of one of Ulverston's most loved festivals.

For decades the Ulverston Lantern Festival has delighted crowds with its diverse array of beautiful lanterns and painstakingly crafted floats.

Whether a replica of Hoad, an elephant or a pirate boat, time and again townspeople push the boundary of what can be created with paper and wood.

WATCH: See last year's spectacular Lantern Festival

The Lantern Festival's inaugural year was back in 1983 when, inspired by traditional Japanese festivals, arts group Welfare State International began their own celebration in the South Lakes.

After attracting around 100 people in 1983 the festival now draws four-fiure crowds every year.

Even after more than three decades the sense of wonder still remains as four processions weave their way through Ulverston, before a spectacular firework finale lights up the sky.

The 2017 festival will take place on Saturday September 16.
