GUSHING water which spilled out from underneath the ground in Ulverston last night has forced a section of a road to be cordoned off.

Police were called at approximately 11pm last night when water started flowing from The Gill down Mill Street in Ulverston.

Cops responded by closing Mill Street and by putting barriers around where the water was coming from.

Mill Street has now been reopened but access to The Gill is limited as yellow barriers have been put in place around the leakage.

Due to the pressure of the water, the road has risen up and there is now a visible hump in the road.

Matt Berry, who lives on nearby Soutergate, was one of the first on the scene.

He thinks that a water pipe underneath the ground has ruptured following some recent roadworks on that stretch of road.

He said: "They have been doing a lot of roadworks here recently and I thought perhaps that during that one of the pipes might have been cut or knocked.

"The water wasn't bubbling or foaming as such, but it was as if someone had just turned on the tap.

"There wasn't a hump in the road before but now because of the surge of water you can quite clearly see that the road has lifted."

At 1am this morning, Mr Berry said that police told him that they were waiting for someone to turn off the water.

Some residents who live in The Gill temporarily lost their water supply last night but it has now been turned back on.
