ONE of the county's favourite agricultural shows is set to be a highlight of the summer calendar as organisers prepare for a fun-packed day of country tradition.

The Millom and Broughton Agricultural Show has a long and rich history, and is well loved by Copeland residents.

If you are looking for a good fun family day out tomorrow, you need look no further than West Park, Broughton, where the show will open its gates at 9am.

Natalie Dennison, trade stand secretary for the show, said: "We are just hoping for a bright sunny day. Everyone is keeping their fingers crossed, especially with the unpredictable August weather we have been having.

"We have a great array of activities planned for this year's show including Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling, a vintage machinery and car display, a dog show and a demonstration from shepherdess, sheepdog trainer and trial competitor, Elaine Hill.

"Elaine will be demonstrating the skill, intelligence and flexibility of her border collies with her displays of sheepdog handling and duck herding."

If you hadn't already been hooked by the duck herding, there will also be the usual agricultural delights including gymkhana events for the horses and cattle and sheep showing.

There will also be tents dedicated to prize poultry, cooking and baking with more details of the prize-giving times to be found on the show's website.

The show field is all ready to be packed with trade stands of many varieties including food such as pies and cheese, crafts and agricultural wares.

Earlier this week there were some doubts about whether the show would go ahead after torrential rain led to localised flooding last weekend, resulting in the cancellation of Hawkshead Show. However, show bosses have assured people that Millom and Broughton Show is still scheduled to go ahead as planned.

The show will be a great chance for people to get out in the countryside for some fresh air and will be one of the last big shows of the summer season after the success of Cartmel and the North Lonsdale Shows.
