WE may be nearing the end of the summer holidays, but there is still plenty of sunshine forecast for the remainder of August, and if 2016 is anything like 2015 we might even get in a bit of an Indian summer in September.

With A-Level results day, GCSE results day and the final race meeting at Cartmel Racecourse, there is still loads to celebrate, so don't go rooting the winder woollies out just yet.

If you need something to pull you back in to that summer mood then look no further than the ice-cream fever that has been sweeping the Lakes this summer.

The NFU recently launched a new interactive map so consumers can find out where real British dairy ice-cream shops are across the country, a bit more information on how it's made and the dairy farmers who keep their cows happy and healthy.

However, our local Cumbrian Cow Ice Cream doesn't really need to be put on a map. You are guaranteed to find ice-creams that have your mouth watering on Mountbarrow Road in Ulverston.

It is unbelievable to think that Cumbrian Cow Ice Cream has only been open for two months as it seems to be well known by just about every family in south Cumbria.

You haven't tried their clotted cream fudge or Ferrero Roche?

Where have you been all summer...?

Ice-cream lovers from all over Cumbria have been gathering in droves at the farm of fourth-generation dairy farmers the Stable family, of Edge Hill Farm, since they diversified in to ice cream making in May this year.

The business got off the ground in June and, since then, the family have been working into the night to make enough ice-cream from their award-winning dairy cows to satisfy their now devoted customer base.

Denise Stable, who works in the shop with her daughters Heather and Jennifer and her daughter-in-law Anna, while her husband Mike continues to farm, said: "It has just been crazy since we opened. We have been open two months now and we ran a Facebook competition to celebrate the 5,000 likes we got on our Facebook page.

"Anyway, the response was just unbelievable, we have over 2,000 people enter. We have also had a lot of success with our cows in other areas this summer too. We have named a lot of our ice-cream sundaes after our favourite cows here on the farm and the 'Sadie' sundae is particularly popular.

"Sadie is like a family pet and won Supreme Champion at the North Lonsdale Show and the Yorkshire Show this summer with our son Tom, who also runs all the social media for the ice-cream side of the business."

The Lake District has also seen the success of another ice-cream venture this summer and it involves another black and white animal - a badger!

English Lakes Ice Cream, based at The Old Dairy on Gilthwaiterigg Lanen, Kendal have released a radical new ice-cream flavour called Badger ice-cream, which has become a firm favourite with both locals and tourists this summer.

The new salted liquorice ice-cream is creamy vanilla with a salted liquorice ripple and is reminiscent of the coat of a badger. The whole point of the quirky new flavour is to raise money for charity.

Twenty per cent of all the ice-cream profits will go to the local wildlife charity Cumbria Wildlife Trust.

Fran Fryer from English Lakes Ice Cream said: “We’re delighted to support Cumbria Wildlife Trust in this way. The striped appearance of our new salted liquorice ripple reminded us of the Trust’s badger logo so we thought supporters would enjoy that! We hope that everyone who buys it this summer will enjoy the intriguing new flavour, while knowing that they’re doing their bit to help a local charity.”

Members of Cumbria Wildlife Trust have reportedly polished off two tubs of the stripey stuff already, and it is available in ice-cream shops all over the county.
