AN ALCOHOLIC who was found drunk and disorderly in Barrow town centre after drinking a bottle of port has been jailed for 24 weeks after breaching his anti-social behavioural order.

Grahame Colin Parker, 53, of Low White Close, Barrow, appeared at Furness Magistrates' Court yesterday where he was given a suspended sentence for breaching his ASBO.

However, just hours later he was arrested by police officers for being drunk and disorderly in a public place which breached the terms of his ASBO.

He appeared again before magistrates this morning and pleaded guilty to the breach.

Mr Robert Smith, prosecuting, told the court that a member of the public phoned the police after they found Mr Parker lying down drunk in Barrow town centre. He was then taken to a police van which he urinated behind.

The 53-year-old, who was released from a stint in prison on July 8 earlier this year, has over 140 previous convictions including an estimated 45 for anti-social behaviour orders since 2012.

Miss Karen Templeton, defending, said: "Mr Parker did get released from court yesterday and went to town to go to the doctors and he admits that he did have some port which he shouldn't have done.

"He has been doing much better recently and this was not some kind of display to try and offend anybody."

Miss Templeton also pleaded with the court to ensure that Mr Parker's sentence was no longer than 26 weeks in a bid to ensure that he kept his house.

She added: "I would ask the court to keep the sentence to less than 26 weeks. If it is more than that he will lose his house and he will come out of custody probably at winter time without a house and he will probably be given a tent again.

"If he comes out of prison again without accommodation he will be back here again within days.

"He is an alcoholic, he does not enjoy going to prison and he has physical health problems meaning he gets a lot of chest and viral infections."

Presiding magistrate, Sue Needham, sentenced Mr Parker to 24 weeks, crediting the early guilty plea, and he will serve 12 weeks inside. He has also been ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £115.

She said: "Mr Parker it was only yesterday that you were given a suspended sentence and you have been in trouble. We are sorry but we are going to have to activate that 18-week suspended sentence.

"We are giving you credit for the early guilty plea with regards to the offence committed yesterday so a 9-week sentence has been reduced down to 6, therefore your prison sentence is 24 weeks.

"After hearing from Miss Templeton we have kept your sentence at less than 26 weeks so hopefully when you are released you will still have your accommodation."
