ULVERSTON made it two from two in the Cumbria League with an emphatic 44-10 victory over Roose Pioneers at Dragley Beck.

However, though the winning margin was 34 points, the visitors gave a good account of themselves as they worked hard throughout.

Ulverston, well led by prop Liam Saunders, crossed for a crucial try on the half-time whistle to extend their lead to ten points, and they never looked back from this.

It was Pioneers who were to put the first points on the board following early home pressure that saw Dave Spedding held up over the line.

The Dragley Beck side were penalised on halfway for pushing and Pioneers took play towards the line with hooker Mike Bower almost crossing.

The cover held him up, but he managed to release the ball to Dan Sharp who touched down, with Adam Batty adding the goal.

This spurred on the visitors and Ade White made good ground down the touchline parting to Batty who chipped ahead, only for the ball to go dead.

Ulverston came more into the picture when Steve O’Connor came into the line. He made good yards before Liam Johns pulled off a try-saving tackle.

The pressure mounted as Liam Saunders, Joel Smith and Sam Shepherd took play to the posts from where Marc Dixon forced his way over. Connor Saunders added the extra two.

Roose almost added to the score when Batty sent Sharp to the posts before Batty put Johny Sloane into space to cross, but a forward pass was ruled.

A counter-attack saw Mark Wilkinson race downfield, only for Ade White to pull off a fine tackle. Play went from one end to the other before Ulverston nudged in front on 32 minutes. And it was a fine try rounded off by Wilkinson after good approach work from Dixon, Connor Saunders and Spencer Hoyland.

And as the half was about to come to a close, Pioneers’ Sloane lost the ball 30 yards from his own line. Matt Storey scooped the ball up before parting to Dave Spedding who sent Williamson over in the corner. Saunders tagged on the goal for 16-6.

The second half was barely under way when further points went on the board.

Dave Spedding made a telling break and in support to gallop in from 25 yards was teenager Brad Williamson. Saunders added the goal points.

Connor Saunders was then denied a try when a forward pass was ruled in the build-up.

However, Matt Storey did touch down for an unconverted try before Pioneers hit back on the hour mark. Corne Els made a good break before Ben Livesey was pushed into touch.

Ulverston then lost possession as Mark Humphries was held short of the line, and from the play the ball Dylan Brown chipped to the corner from where Johns went over.

Both teams pressed for more points and it was the home side who added to their tally on 68 minutes.

O’Connor and Williamson paved the way for Wilkinson to cross out wide, with Saunders landing a touchline goal.

Swift handling left to right by the home side then saw Connor Saunders send Scott Houston over, with Saunders tagging on the goal.

Pioneers did threaten, keeping the ball alive through Batty and Sharp who sent Johns on a good run downfield, but his pass inside went to ground.

And to round off a good day at the office for the home side O’Connor crossed and Saunders goaled to close the scoring.
