Millom 78 Stanley Rangers 0

MILLOM bounced back from their derby day defeat to Barrow Island with a rampant performance against a brave Stanley Rangers outfit.

The Woollybacks ran in 13 tries, matching their feat against Eastmoor Dragons earlier in the National Conference Division Three campaign.

The scene was set early on when Millom crossed after only two minutes through Ross Brookes. Lee Postlethwaite converted.

The second score took a little longer, but it came on 16 minutes when rugby union convert Scott Fisher went over the whitewash. Again, Postlethwaite added the extra two points.

Tom Newbegin was the next to score on 25 minutes, and with Ricky Donoghue going over on his return to the side and Ross Brookes adding his second of the match right on the stroke of half-time, it meant Millom led 30-0 at the break.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, with Owen Myers starting off proceedings with a try of his own after he had played a major part in Millom’s opening blitz. Postlethwaite converted once more to maintain his 100 per cent record.

It was not long before Millom were in again through Myers’ half-back partner Ricky Donoghue, finishing off a well-worked move as Brookes latched onto Donoghue’s pass out the back before breaking and drawing in the full-back and offloading to Donoghue. Postlethwaite made no mistake and converted again to push the margin to 42-0.

Millom were not finished yet.

Connor Mitchell, Joseph Wright and Brookes – completing his superb hat-trick – pushed them further in front, with Postlethwaite’s conversions making it 60-0, the score bearing more resemblance to those found on the cricket fields nearby.

Newbegin, Postlethwaite and Tyler Lancaster rounded off the scoring with another final charge at the Rangers defence, and Postlethwaite converted them all for a perfect record of 13 from 13 for the afternoon in a well-polished performance from the Millom side.

Ex-Barrow Raiders man Brookes took the man-of-the-match award for his excellent display and hat-trick, returning to the form which saw him earn a place on the Barrow books.
