Walney Island U14s 7 Rossendale Valley U14s 2

UNBEATEN Walney Island inflicted a first defeat of the season on Rossendale Valley to reach the quarter-finals of the Lancashire FA Under-14s Cup.

The islanders were just too good for their North Bury and District Premier League opponents, wrapping up a comfortable win in the winter sunshine on Tummerhill.

Unlike in the previous round, where Charnock Richard took a three-goal lead inside the opening 10 minutes and Walney had to fight back, the hosts got off to a flier.

They were 1-0 up after only five minutes, with a Ryan Wilson goal opening their account.

Taylor Gill went close to adding a second on 12 minutes after good work from Corbin Pratt, Lewis Atkinson and Callum Leech.

Then it was Rossendale's turn, with a long-range effort just creeping over the bar.

The ball was then worked up the pitch from Rory Hampton to Pat Cush, who fed Gill to put Rio Corkill through on goal to make the score 2-0 after 20 minutes.

Walney were getting a real foothold in the game, and, after some great defending from Luke Broadbent and Ethan Broadfoot, they were soon 3-0 ahead, with Wilson claiming his second goal two minutes before half-time to give the home team a great cushion at the break.

The visitors started to play some good football after the interval, with their big left-back and number nine always proving a threat.

But the next goal went to the hosts, who were awarded a free-kick deep in their own half. Broadbent picked out Corkill from 50 yards, who brilliantly chipped the Rossendale keeper to make it 4-0.

The Valley responded within a minute to score their first goal and try to keep their unbeaten record intact.

But Louis Hodgson began to control the midfield for the hosts, along with Pratt, who sent Gill on a great run. He rounded the keeper and slotted home to make the score 5-1.

Only a minute later, Corkill had his hat-trick with a powerful header to open up a five-goal margin.

With the game seemingly put to bed, Walney switched off for the first time in the game, and allowed Rossendale to score and make it 6-2.

Rory Hampton made a couple of good saves for the hosts to prevent any kind of comeback, while Nathan Ducie was feeding some great balls to Wilson at the other end, who was unlucky not to get his third with one chance being cleared off the line by a Rossendale defender.

Matthew Shaw then found Gill, who duly obliged by scoring his second and Walney's seventh to wrap up the tie.

After a great all-round performance, Walney face an away trip to Blackburn to Face Mellor Juniors in the quarter-finals on January 8.
