CUMBRIA suffered disappointing defeat for the second match running in their Ladies County match against North Midlands.

Their strong opponents dominated on home soil to ensure a narrow Cumbria victory at Walney Park was more than overturned.

The match was an hour late in starting due as an accident on the M6 held up the travelling team, however the Midlands side played a fast Walney Park green really well and Cumbria won by a single chalk.

There were six wins for the hosts, with Debbie Hall and Brenda Gillen – returning after a long break from the county side – both triumphing 21-10 for the standout results.

Marian Alexander, 21-18, Julie Creighton, 21-17, Jessica Wernham, 21-16, and Emma Thornton 21-13 made up the sextet of victors.

Other results at Walney Park saw defeats for Caroline Bushell, 21-18, Glenis McDonald, 21-16, Pam Charnley, 21-11, Sandra Rigg, 21-18, newcomer to the side Emma Wakefield, 21-9, and Marion Woods 21-13.

In the Midlands, a difficult, fast green was too much to handle for the visitors, who took only three games and lost the tie by 101 chalks for a 100-chalk defeat overall.

Cumbria Ladies thanked Walney Park for hosting the game, their ladies for their time and work providing refreshments, and sponsors A Holdens, K&B Creations and the King Alfred Hotel for their continued support.

Their next match will be against a Lancashire side on July 16, with the home leg played at the Co-op.
