With tomorrow being Non-League Day, Barrow AFC’s home match against Dover Athletic already meant the afternoon had some significance, but it could also be one where Ian Evatt’s side make history.

The Bluebirds have the chance to equal the best winning run in their history, as if they defeat the Whites at Holker Street, they will record their eighth straight league win.

Not since Chorley were beaten 1-0 on the first day of April 1905 have AFC recorded such a lengthy run of victories and it put them on the path to winning promotion from Division Two of the Lancashire Combination.

Barrow’s wonderful form means the crowd was always likely to be a healthy one for the visit of Dover, but with ticket prices reduced to £9 per adult and under-16s allowed in for free, they are set for a bumper attendance and hope for over 2,500 to be inside.

Manager Evatt said: “I think it’s good value and if we can turn up and play the way we’ve been playing, I think for £9 hopefully you’ll see an excellent team playing excellent football.

“It will be a good game because Dover are a very good side, they’ve got an excellent away record. I know they were beaten on Tuesday night, but they’ve done very well away from home.

“It’ll be a tough game, but it will be one where we’re trying to do the same thing again and try to win for everybody and push up the table as soon as we can.”

Winning the last seven games has ensured there isn’t much further up the table the Bluebirds can push as Tuesday night’s 3-1 victory against Boreham Wood lifted them up to fourth, just four points behind the leaders, Halifax.

It was the just the third time Barrow have made it a magnificent seven, but Evatt isn’t getting carried away by the fact that the previous two times it was achieved came in seasons where they won promotion.

He said: “There’s a long, long way to go. This is a really tough, unforgiving division and games can turn at the drop of a hat.

“It only takes a second to score a goal and we just have to keep grounded, keep working hard and do the basics well, which we’re doing really well at the moment.

“We’ll keep going and we’ll see where it takes us - we’re getting a lot of compliments, the lads deserve the praise they’re getting, but there’s still lots of hard work to be done and lots of improvement to come.”

Dover were surprisingly thrashed 4-0 at struggling Aldershot Town in midweek and it extended their winless run to three games ahead of their 367-mile journey from Kent to Cumbria.

They did, however, come from two goals down to beat the Bluebirds on their last visit in April and Evatt believes they could be something of a wounded animal tomorrow.

He said: “We do a lot of analysis on the opposition, picking out strengths and weaknesses, and Boreham Wood are a very good team, particularly at the top end of the pitch.

“They’ve got some real threats, so to keep them quiet like we did was really pleasing and it’s the same with Dover.

“They’ll be smarting after Tuesday, they’ll want a reaction and again we’ll have to be confident, play our way and if we can get that big bumper crowd with a fantastic atmosphere that really backs the players, then hopefully we’ll get another result.”
