Barrow AFC’s season already bears one similarity to last year in that their form has turned off the back of a win at Aldershot Town, but they’ll be hoping the same won’t be said after tomorrow’s match at Bromley.

Defeat at Hayes Lane a year ago was the start of a six-game losing run, which included them being knocked out of the FA Cup, that only came to an end in that aforementioned match against the Shots.

That, by some margin, is Evatt’s worst run as a manager, but he goes into the match against the National League leaders in the middle of his best and he is potentially one game away from becoming the first man in charge of the Bluebirds to record six straight league wins in the fifth tier.

AFC dropped out of the play-off places after Barnet’s midweek win at AFC Fylde and they’ll be up against a Bromley side looking to bounce back from their first defeat of the campaign at Yeovil Town last week.

Evatt said: “Bromley brings back bad memories because it was a game we dominated and probably should have got something out of. We lost 2-1 and it was the start of that horrendous run where we lost six on the spin.

“We need to go there and keep doing what we’re doing, do the basics well, the hard work and the graft off the ball, but then in possession if we keep creating the chances that we are doing then we’ll give them a good game.

“If you’d have asked them before last weekend, they’re next two games were Yeovil and us, probably the two form teams of the division, so that was going to tell them a lot about where they’re at.

“They’ve lost the first one and they’ll be looking for a reaction against us on Saturday, but we have to make sure that we bring what we are doing consistently well at the moment to the table and see what happens.”

Barrow have been doing their best to prepare for Bromley’s artificial pitch on the ‘3G’ surface at their Hopwood Hall training base this week, as they look to become the first team to defeat the Ravens on their own patch this season.

Evatt knows, however, that his team will still be at a disadvantage on the day, which is their first of three fixtures on such a surface this season.

He said: “We’ve done some work on the 3G pitch, but the problem we’ve got is they’re all different.

“As I’ve said many times, I’m not a huge fan of them because I think it’s a massive advantage for teams in this league and I don’t really see the point in having them if you can’t move on and progress into the Football League with them.

“But that’s my own opinion and we’ll go out there and do the best we can to try and get all three points. We don’t go anywhere to try and draw, we go to win.”

Evatt is delighted with how his players have started to get the basics right in the last month after a series of individual errors prevented them from getting results in the early part of the campaign.

“I think we’ve been better in and out of possession,” Evatt said. “I think our transitions have been excellent.

“We are a strong, aggressive, fit team who are now starting to press the ball consistently for 90 minutes and then it’s the calmness when you win the ball back, switching modes into being cool and calm in possession.

“I think we’re getting that balance right at the moment, so hopefully we can carry on with that.”
