Moore will be in charge of Barrow AFC’s home game against Boreham Wood tomorrow, where victory would no doubt improve his chances of being handed the managerial reins on a full-time basis after Paul Cox’s resignation a week ago.
His short reign as AFC caretaker boss so far has seen the Bluebirds draw 1-1 at home to Maidenhead last Saturday and lose 1-0 AFC Fylde on Bank Holiday Monday.
While those results and performances were far from eye-catching, Moore can feel a bit aggrieved as Barrow could easily have turned a second-half comeback against Maidenhead into a victory and they carved out enough chances to have earned a draw at Fylde.
AFC managing director Andrew Casson says Moore deserves a chance to put his case forward before they discuss other candidates at boardroom level.
In an interesting development yesterday, Moore will have his old mate Marcus Bignot alongside him in the dug-out, a man he has worked with before at Solihull and Grimsby.
Said Casson: “I had a good conversation with Micky on Tuesday after the disappointment of Monday at Fylde and we talked about what worked and what didn’t.
“He took on board a lot of what I said to him about taking this opportunity with both hands and showing what he can do.
“Obviously he wants to be as delicate with the change process as he can be. Players are sometimes wary of too many changes being made.
“I said to Micky: ‘This is your opportunity so go out and show your playing style, show your motivational style and then we can have a good basis to make a decision from’.”
Victory over Boreham Wood would be a big filip – not just for Moore, but for a Barrow team lying 19th in the 24-team National League table with seven points from seven games.
The season is still in its infancy and the league is tightly packed so there is nothing to panic about. But even so, defeat to the Hertfordshire side would see Barrow with just one win from their first eight games and at the wrong end of the table, ahead of a tasty trip to north west rivals Tranmere.
“It’s a big game, there’s no doubt about,” said Casson, who is hoping for a big turnout from the AFC faithful to help Moore’s men get back to winning ways.
“We’re seven games in now, it hasn’t gone ideally, but this is the squad we’ve got for now. These are the management staff we have got, and we need people to come out and support the team on a regular basis because they can make a difference at the end of the day.
“Fortunately, the way the rest of the games have played out the league is very tight from top to bottom, but if we don’t get a result and some of the top teams win their games you start getting 10, 11, 12 points off the top, and you need to make sure that gap stays single-digit as much as possible.
“And most importantly of all you get a win against a good team like Boreham Wood and it gives everyone a bit of momentum, and then you go into a big game against Tranmere that everyone will be up for and you can just continue that on.”
