BARROW AFC are keeping their fingers crossed as they wait for news on defender Dave Nieskens' knee injury.

The Dutch centre-half went into hospital yesterday to confirm whether he has damaged his anterior cruciate ligaments – a season-ending issue – or rather the meniscus cartilage around the joint.

If it is a meniscus injury, then Nieskens – who picked up the problem in the 1-0 defeat at Tranmere Rovers last month – could be back in action by Christmas.

Manager Micky Moore is waiting for confirmation either way by the end of today.

“Dave has been in, and we should hear by the end of today so we know exactly what it is,” said Moore. “We're just waiting on a phone call now.

“He's been in to see if it is the meniscus or if it's the ACL. If it's the ACL, he'll be out for the season; if it's the meniscus, it could be Christmas or January – he'd definitely get 15 or 20 games in before the end of the season.”
