BARROW AFC’s Kian Spence is going into tonight’s clash with Walsall on a real high.

And the midfielder believes the whole Bluebirds’ squad is on the up after the 2-0 victory at home to Colchester United.

Spence knows the Saddlers will be looking to make the most of home advantage and says that Barrow will have to match them.

He said: “It will be a tough game, they have been on a really good run of form and they have a lot of good players.

“It’s at their place so they are going to be up for it, and want to put a show on for their fans, so we’ve just got to go down there and be right up for it ourselves.”

Saturday’s victory was a real shot in the arm for Barrow and left them sixth in the League Two table – in one of the play-off berths and just seven points from one of the automatic promotion spots.

But while a top three finish would be the dream, Spence admits it’s all about focussing on the job at hand for Pete Wild’s side.

He added: “It’s obviously still a possibility (automatic promotion), but we set ourselves a target at the start of the season to try to make the play-offs and that is still our target.

“We have a points target that we try to stick to, and if we end up in and around the automatic spots then that’s massive for us.”

The Bluebirds are back on track after consecutive wins and Spence admits that has given everyone a lift.

“I’d say it was massive for morale. It’s tough losing games, so when it comes to losing three back-to-back when we have lost so little all season it’s massive to get back the feelgood factor.

“So, getting two wins back-to-back on a Tuesday and a Saturday was massive for the mentality of the group.”

Spence scored a wonderful free-kick to put the Cumbrians ahead against Colchester.

And having reached seven goals for the season, he admits that’s something he has been looking to improve on.

“I’ve always been saying I want to add goals and assists to my game,” he revealed

“I’d say trying to get that first one initially was the aim, thankfully that came in my first game.

“Then I’d say the standard target is to try to get to five, and then once you hit that just looking to try to get to double figures, which is always kind of the promised land as a midfielder.

“So now it’s more about taking it as it comes and hoping it helps the team out.

“Scoring a goal is the best feeling in football and when you can score a 'worldie' of a goal it’s always that little bit better.

“I’d say it personally gave me a massive lift and hopefully it gave the rest of the lads that.”
