BARROW AFC’s Elliot Newby is ready to keep making the case for the defence for the good of the club.

The Barrow-born midfielder has been used as a wing-back on a number of occasions this term and against Sutton United at the weekend switched to full-back as the match progressed.

The player himself is first to admit he prefers going forward to staying back, but he is ready to do what is needed for the team.

Speaking to the club’s official Facebook page he was asked his feelings about being deployed at left-back later in the game against Sutton.

“I’ll say I really enjoyed it because the manager might be listening,” he joked.

“Obviously I want to go forward as much as possible, but when we are pushing to win a game, we switched it up to go to a four and I’ve had to kind of fill in there (left-back) in order to get more attacking players on.

“I still feel I can be an outlet there when we have got the ball, so it’s a job I’m happy to do if we are going for the win.”

On his role as a wing-back, he added: “I’ve had to do a bit more defensive work than I’m used to but at the same time I do get to get forward quite a lot.

“We do play through quite a lot, and the midfielders are really good at finding passes to me, so yeah I do enjoy playing that position.

“Sometimes it’s easier to pick the ball up in that position rather than as a winger if you’re marked so I’m definitely enjoying it.

“I think Wozza (David Worrall) had played at wing back on the other side and he’s an attacking player as well, so it proves that we want to be on the front foot, and we want attacking players on the pitch who can also do a job defensively.”

The Bluebirds had to settle for a share of the spoils at the weekend drawing 2-2 against a Sutton side at the wrong end of the League Two table, but also under a new manager in Steve Morison.

And while Newby would obviously have preferred to have taken all three points, he admits one point on the road was better than none.

He added: “It was a scrap really. I thought we had some really good spells in the game, but to be fair to them they competed well, ran about and made it difficult for us, and a point was probably a fair result in the end.

“We've scored so many goals in the second half of games and late on in games, so we’ve always got that belief.

“I think we had the belief that we could go on and win it in the end, just the kind of big chance didn’t really drop to us in the end.”

Newby once again turned provider as he set up Ben Whitfield for his 10th goal of the season.

That makes it three assists from three games for the Cumbrian and he admits he’s pleased to keep delivering.

“That’s what I want to try to do – set up chances for other people,” he said.

“Obviously the strikers have been really good this season putting most of the chances away and Whits (Whitfield) put one away against Sutton, which was really good.

“I want to try to contribute in that way. I think that is something I can offer to the team, so I’m really happy when I’m doing that.

“I’m comfortable going both sides (of the field) or crossing with both my feet so I think that obviously keeps the defender guessing on where you are going to go, so it’s good to have that skill as a wide player.”
