BARROW AFC's Ben Whitfield has been nominated for December's League Two Player of the Month award.

The 27-year-old striker played a pivotal role in the Bluebirds' unbeaten League run in December in which he found the net four times and provided an assist.

These goals included a volley on the turn against Crewe Alexandra and a stunner against Accrington Stanley, with Barrow man taking his tally for the season to nine in the final month of 2023, surpassing his 2022/23 total of six.

Notts County striker Macauley Langstaff, MK Dons defender Dean Lewington, and Tranmere Rovers winger Kieron Morris have also been nominated for the monthly prize.

Whitfield saw the start of the his 2023/24 campaign curtailed by an Achilles, but since returning to the Bluebirds' starting 11 has shown the form which made him an integral part of Barrow's historic ninth-placed finish last season.

However, this has involved a tweak in his positioning by manager Pete Wild who has moved the winger into a more central striker role.

Speaking to the club's media after the Bluebirds' 2-2 draw with Stockport County at Holker Street on Boxing Day, Whitfield explained how he was finding the tactical tweak.

"It’s now becoming more natural," he said.

"I’m working hard on the training pitch with the gaffer and Temps (assistant manager Adam Temple) showing me different things each week, and showing me how they want me to play, and it’s only helping me.

“Obviously, I’m naturally a winger, but to come into the role is one I am really enjoying.

“I have enjoyed playing in the role and hopefully I can keep on scoring.”
