BARROW AFC forward Ben Whitfield has described the euphoria in the team after they beat Walsall 2-0 yesterday at Holker Street.

The result elevated the Bluebirds into the automatic promotion spots and extended their unbeaten streak to 11 matches in all competitions.

Whitfield fired Barrow into an early lead in the 11th minute as he delicately controlled Niall Canavan’s long pass and then arrowed a right-footed shot into the bottom corner past a helpless Owen Evans.

Canavan then doubled their advantage in the 70th minute by bundling in George Ray’s cross at the back post.

“We’re buzzing,” Whitfield told the club website.

“It’s good to come home after a few away wins and get three points. There’s been four changes made tonight and we’ve still won, as a squad that’s all we can keep doing.

“We’re playing some great football and we’ve been unbelievable all season.

“I think that shows in the strength in depth we have. It’s a credit to everyone at the football club and long may it continue.”

As a result, Pete Wild’s side now boast the best defensive record in the division having conceded just 16 goals out of their opening 20 matches.

Whitfield added: “The defence has been rock solid all season. We know if we go one nil or two nil up that we don’t look like conceding.”
