BARROW AFC defender Mazeed Ogungbo believes he is 'getting stronger' after finding the net in the Bluebirds EFL Trophy victory over Liverpool Under-21s.

Mateusz Musialowski opened the scoring for the young Reds at Holker Street on the half-an-hour mark but Wild's side were able to complete their second-half comeback thanks to goals from B Team prospect Sean Etaluku and defender Ogungbo.

However, despite securing three points, the result was not enough to keep Barrow in the competition, with the Bluebirds bowing out.

Speaking after the game to the club's media, Ogungbo explained how the Bluebirds evidenced their 'resilience' against the Liverpool youth side.

"I think it is a good result, obviously I am happy to get my first goal for the club but yeah it was a good win," He said.

"I think we showed our resilience to stay in the game and get back into it and obviously our maturity to get the win in the end was good.

"We knew they were going to be good with the ball but we had a game plan going into it and I think all in all we executed it very well so it was a good night."

Ogungbo's start to the 2023/24 campaign following his move from Arsenal to Barrow was curtailed by a knee injury he sustained in pre-season, however, long-term injuries to fellow full-backs Tyrell Warren and Junior Tiensia have opened the door for the 21-year-old to make his mark on Wild's squad.

Barrow's clash with the young Reds in South Cumbria was the defender's second consecutive start after he played a role in the Bluebirds' victory over Northampton Town in the first round of the FA Cup last weekend.

He said: "I am definitely happy to have scored, I am grateful to god and hopefully it is the first of many.

"It is tough after the start I had but I am really grateful for the minutes I have been getting and I feel like with each game I am getting stronger and getting back to the level that I know I am going to be able to achieve.

"Now I am seeing the fruits of all the work I put in to try and get back on the pitch so I am ready to kick on from now."
