Barrow AFC caretaker boss Rob Kelly insisted he never doubted that striker Scott Quigley would find his shooting boots after he helped fire the Bluebirds to a 3-0 win at the weekend.

Quigley, last season’s top scorer, banished ghosts of penalty misses past against Cheltenham Town after he was off-target with his last two to bag his second goal in as many games.

And Kelly, who has been in charge of the side since David Dunn departed the club earlier this month, stressed he is always backing the forward when he gets a chance in front of goal.

He said: ”I never think it’s going to be one of those days when someone like Scott Quigley misses a couple of chances.

“That’s the way I am, I’m always thinking he’ll get another chance and that he will score.

“You have to because that’s the only thing you can control.

"I don’t like negativity, I’m not built like that.

“I worry about strikers when they’re not getting chances, as long as they’re getting chances then they’ll score goals because they’re at this level for a reason.”

Quigley, who scored 20 goals in all competitions in the club's promotion push to return to the Football League last season, notched his third goal in his last six League Two games.

The much-needed win was made more comfortable by second-half goals from Luke James and Harrison Biggins with their third and second goals off the season respectively to cap an impressive performance.

It was a display which was vital as the club were able to welcome more fans back to Holker Street following a successful return for spectators at the start of the month.

Kelly, who may remain in charge this weekend if the club does not appoint Dunn's successor before then, was keen for the club to build on the positives of the crucial three points.

“The sensible cause of action is having a season where we work hard, stabilise the club and make it a Football League club," he said.

"It’s progressive stuff and lots of little things in the background that are important are getting better.

“We’re trying to make it a sustainable, Football League club.”

Barrow are next in action against Port Vale on Saturday.
