BARROW AFC 2 LEEDS U21 2 (Barrow won 4-3 on penalties): Barrow came from two goals down to force a draw against Leeds’ Under-21s before grabbing a bonus point on penalties.

Sub Dior Angus and Jason Taylor hauled David Dunn’s side back into the EFL Trophy game after two first-half goals from Leeds’ Max Dean.

New signing Chris Taylor then struck the decisive sudden-death kick in a 4-3 shoot-out victory.

Dunn handed an immediate debut to Taylor, the experienced former Oldham and Blackburn man going straight into the midfield, with fellow new boy Yoan Zouma starting on the right of the back three for the northern group G game.

They featured in a much-changed line-up which saw only Connor Brown remaining from the XI that faced Carlisle.

Barrow went close early on when Josh Kay stepped inside and hit a shot which keeper Elia Caprile had to push away. The Bluebirds, though, were caught out on 12 minutes as keeper Josh Lillis was forced to the edge of his box to reach a weak Callum Gribbin backpass and Max Dean emerged from the challenge with the ball, cutting in and curling home.

The quick-breaking Leeds almost doubled their lead, but Stuart McKinstry was denied by Lillis’ fingertips.

The willingness of Leeds’ young prospects to speed forward in numbers was clear - in front of a small, vocal handful of away fans who had gathered behind the Brian Arrowsmith Stand to peer into this behind-closed-doors fixture – but on 24 minutes Kay made a surging run and low shot which Caprile tipped wide.

Dunn’s side went further behind on 38 minutes when Gribbin lost the ball near his own box, Crycensio Summerville squaring for Dean.

Dunn’s side went harder in search of a way back after the break, and sub Angus halved the deficit on the hour mark after rounding the keeper.

Lillis, who made some good saves, then did well to deny Summerville - before Jason Taylor got on the end of a James cross from the right and headed the equaliser past the stranded Caprile.

That took it to penalties with three Josh Lillis saves before Taylor finally won it.
