British Legion A were confirmed as this year’s snooker champions in the Barrow Friday League with one round of fixtures remaining after a 2-1 home win against Roose Cons gave them an unassailable seven-point lead.

John Tyerman lost out to a black ball game to Lee Majors 50-41, but Dave Simpson, with the help of a 20 break, took a comfortable 67-27 win over Dave Kewley, to level the match before Billy Burns sealed the title by getting the better of Nick Wilkes, but only just, winning 47-39 in a very close game.

Second-placed British Legion won two games away to the Navy Club, with Ray Gardner taking the first game of the night with a 44-10 win over Dave Wilkie.

He was backed up with a similar win for Jack Arnold, who beat Dave Simpson 44-16, before Joe O’Leary pulled one back for the home side on the last game with a 65-39 win over Legion’s top man and captain Mike Smith.

Barrow Football Supporters Club took two good home points against Vickerstown Cricket Club with wins for Harry Bateman, beating Josh Francis 60-34, and Steve Redpath, who got the better of Jimmy Allen with a very similar score line.

Stuart Benson pulled a point back for the Cricketers by winning a tight game against Frank Mullen 62-52.

British Legion A need only a couple more points to also take the darts league title following a 6-1 win against Roose Cons.

Mike Yorke (100) was too strong for Lee Majors (118) but struggled to knock up, eventually hitting double two. Shaun McPoland (125, 100) overpowered Nick Wilkes before Mala McCoy made it 3-0 with a comfortable win over Terry Chissim.

Wilkes, playing in his second game, came good at the end to defeat Tony McMillan while Dave Simpson, with a 154 score, finally secured victory hitting double four after Mike Irving got close.

Dave Macmillan ground out the victory over Rob Chissim to make it 5-1 before Billy Bowes (100) saw off a brave attempt from Peter Roberts.

The British Legion spoiled the Navy Club’s chances making it to the top of the league table by defeating them 5-2. The game of the night belonged to Dave Roberts, who had a ton score and a magnificent 180 against Chris Kirkby, while the Legion’s other wins came from Allan Edmondson, Colin Taylor (with a 64 knock up), Tony Norman and Kevin Quinn (59 knock up).

Vickerstown Cricket Club just had the edge in their 4-3 away win against Barrow Football Supporters Club with Bryan Jones beating Nathan Johnson (119) 601-599. Their other wins came from Francis, Allen and captain Bob Crosthwaite.
