Barrow Raiders players past and present were part of the RFL’s League One Team of the Decade, with Martin Aspinwall and Jono Smith both being included.

Former skipper Aspinwall received plenty of recognition during his illustrious playing career, which included touring Australia and New Zealand with Great Britain in 2006 and his enduring quality shone through with the Raiders whilst playing in the third tier.

The former Wigan and Huddersfield centre arrived at Craven Park in 2016 and helped Barrow to promotion to the Betfred Championship the following year.

The 38-year-old retired in November after deciding his body wouldn’t be able to stand the rigours of another year of playing rugby league.

Loose forward Smith spent more of the last decade in League One, making his first appearance at that level against the Raiders with North Wales Crusaders in March 2012.

He won promotion with the Wrexham-based side in 2013, but only spent one season in the Championship with them as they went straight back down.

The 2020 season with be Smith's first season in League One with Barrow, who he joined for the 2018 campaign, following their promotion.

* The funeral of former Barrow player and coach Frank Foster will take place at St Georges Church in Barrow on Friday at midday.

Foster, one of rugby league's all-time greats and toughest forwards, died just before Christmas aged 79.

Born in West Cumbria, Foster had a fantastic playing career with Workington, Hull Kingston Rovers, Bradford Northern, Barrow and Oldham and gaining one cap with Great Britain. He then coached Barrow for ten years from 1973 until 1983 before moving up the coast to Whitehaven.
